A forest fire declared this Wednesday afternoon in the Ordal mountains, within the municipality of Cervelló, has forced the preventive confinement of about 300 residents of the urbanisations of Can Paulet and les Rovires. Civil Protection has activated the ES-Alert warning on mobile phones in the area to urge the population to stay indoors.
The fire started shortly before 14:00 in a high area of the mountains, a site with abundant forest cover and rugged terrain that complicates firefighting efforts. The strong winds blowing in Baix Llobregat are complicating the fire's evolution and may cause sudden changes in the direction and speed of the front.
The firefighters of the Generalitat have 38 ground units and ten aerial resources deployed. The efforts are particularly focused on the left flank of the fire, considered the most delicate point due to the risk of flames entering the bottom of a ravine and gaining intensity. Aerial resources are making water and retardant drops on both flanks to prevent the fire from spreading and expanding the affected perimeter.
Authorities have recommended that confined residents close doors and windows, avoid any travel, and follow the instructions of emergency services. The column of smoke is visible from numerous points in Baix Llobregat, such as Vallirana, Corbera de Llobregat, and Molins de Rei, as well as from various stretches of the motorway. Ashes have even reached some nearby towns to the fire area.
Emergency services are maintaining the operation on the ground while assessing the evolution of the flames and the need to extend the confinement of the two urbanisations. So far, no personal or material damage has been reported, but the operation remains active due to the possible evolution of the fire.
The fire in Cervelló adds to other forest fires that have affected the region in recent days, in a context of drought and high temperatures. Authorities remind the importance of taking extreme precautions and avoiding any activity that could cause a fire.
