The creator of 'Crims' and '33 días' launches a new fiction project, filmed in Badalona. The series, consisting of three episodes, follows a jury that must decide on a self-defense case.
The facilities of the Tribunal de Justícia de Catalunya have been recreated in a studio in Badalona for the filming of 'Veredicto', the new Movistar Plus+ series created by Eduard Sola, Pol Cortecans, and Daniel González based on an idea by Carles Porta. The popular crime broadcaster, known for his mastery of 'true crime' in Spain, faces his second fiction project here after '33 días'.
The series, which consists of three episodes, focuses on the deliberations of a jury made up of nine people who must decide whether to convict a man of murder. The accused, a teacher previously convicted for possession of child pornography, has killed the father of one of his former students. He admits to the homicide but claims self-defense.
The cast is led by Nagore Aranburu, Ernesto Alterio, Alba Flores, Omar Ayuso, Secun de la Rosa, Alfredo Castro, Marc Soler, Júlia Mascort, and Cris Blanco. All of them portray anonymous citizens randomly selected to be part of the jury, a diverse group that must reach a unanimous verdict.
“Self-defense is a topic that addresses fears, limits, anger, and violence, so there is a lot of philosophical depth behind it,” explains Eduard Sola, the series' screenwriter and the mind behind the successful 'Casa en flames'. “Moreover, in a case where public pressure is very present, it also speaks to our behaviours as a society,” he adds.
The filming, which takes place in Badalona, faithfully recreates the atmosphere of a deliberation room. From the studio window, a landscape similar to what one would see from the third floor of the Tribunal de Justícia de Catalunya is visible, a detail that aims to immerse the viewer in the judicial atmosphere.
“All the people locked up there deliberating are different from one another and have to agree on something, and that is a good example of democracy, empathy, and dialogue,” reflects Sola. “It reminds us that what makes us human is our ability to understand one another.”
To ensure realism, the creators consulted a prosecutor specialised in drafting the documents that the jury must handle, such as the verdict form, which includes the questions they must answer. “We haven't made anything up regarding the process,” assures Sola, who acknowledges that, dramatically, it would have been easier to simplify the procedure.
The series, directed by Carlos Marques-Marcet (known for '10.000 km' and 'Los días que vendrán'), promises a legal thriller that, despite being based on a fictional case, relies on a rigorous legal background. The filming in Badalona, a city that has already hosted other audiovisual productions, strengthens the series' connection to the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
Carles Porta, who has revolutionised the 'true crime' genre in Spain with programmes like 'Crims' and '33 días', takes a further step into fiction with 'Veredicto'. The series will premiere soon on Movistar Plus+, although a specific date has yet to be announced. Fans of the legal genre and suspense stories have a new appointment with the mark of the Catalan journalist.
