The Swiss multinational ABB Robotics will build a 15,000 square metre technology and operations centre in the Sant Pau de Riu Sec industrial estate in Sabadell, where it will concentrate engineering, training, and customer service.
The Swiss multinational ABB Robotics has confirmed its plan to build a new technology and operations centre of 15,000 square metres in Sabadell, specifically in the Sant Pau de Riu Sec industrial area. The facility will group together the company's engineering, customer experience, training, service, and operations areas, as reported by the company in a statement.
The aim of this investment is to “further strengthen Spain's role as a strategic centre for advanced robotics,” sources from ABB Robotics have stated. The firm, one of the world leaders in robotics, expects to use these new facilities to develop robotic system solutions for sectors such as automotive, electronics, and logistics.
At this time, the company has not specified the timeline for the construction or the exact location within the industrial estate. ABB Robotics has specialised in the creation of industrial robots, cobots (collaborative robots), and autonomous mobile robots (AMR), all powered by artificial intelligence. The company currently employs around 7,000 people worldwide.
The choice of Sabadell is not coincidental. The multinational has highlighted “the strategic location of the site and its transport connections,” with direct access to the C-58 and AP-7 motorways, as key factors. Furthermore, the decision responds to a project of continuity of a shared industrial heritage: for nearly a century, ABB was one of the main economic drivers of the city.
In fact, the former factory of the firm was preserved and in 2007 was transformed into the Fira Sabadell, keeping alive the legacy of one of the municipality's most emblematic companies. With this new centre, ABB Robotics strengthens its historical bond with Sabadell and bets on the development of advanced robotics in the region.
The announcement comes at a time when robotics and automation are gaining traction in the Catalan industrial fabric. The new facility will allow ABB Robotics to offer solutions closer to its customers and train professionals in the latest technologies. The residents of Sabadell and the Vallès Occidental could benefit from the creation of skilled jobs and the boost to the local economy that this centre will bring.
