The Badalona City Council will start next week the urban redevelopment works of the Assemblea de Catalunya square and the creation of a bus lane on Vía Augusta, with a budget of 1.8 million euros.
Badalona will give a new boost to the urban transformation of its historic centre with the start of the redevelopment works of the Assemblea de Catalunya square and the implementation of an exclusive bus lane on Vía Augusta towards Mataró. The project, which has a budget of 1.8 million euros, will begin next week and is expected to last five months.
The action is part of the reorganisation of mobility linked to the calming of Francesc Layret street, which is currently underway. Until now, this road was the main circulation axis for buses towards Mataró, but its conversion into a pedestrian space has forced the municipal government to seek an alternative, which has been placed on Vía Augusta.
The main novelty will be the creation of a bus lane in the opposite direction to general traffic between Martí i Pujol avenue and President Companys avenue. To achieve this, Vía Augusta will be reorganised with three lanes: one existing for buses towards Barcelona, a central lane for general traffic, and a new lane reserved for buses and authorised services towards Mataró, located on the seaside.
This new road configuration will also require the reordering of traffic on Martí i Pujol avenue, between Vía Augusta and Francesc Layret, to facilitate bus turns. This section will have three lanes, two for ascending and one for descending, and will incorporate a new bus stop.
The reform of Vía Augusta will involve a modification of the street section. The sidewalk on the seaside will be remodelled and will have a width of between three and three and a half meters, although in front of the Bingo it will be reduced to 2.40 meters due to space limitations. The sidewalk on the mountain side will remain unchanged.
The action includes the complete transformation of the Assemblea de Catalunya square, which will cease to function as a surface parking lot. The blue zone parking spaces will disappear to convert this area into a public square intended for pedestrians.
To ensure residents' access to existing driveways, a service lane of about five meters wide will be maintained next to the facades. This road will be separated from the new walking area by flowerbeds with shrubs and flowers of different shades, which will create new gathering spaces equipped with benches and urban furniture to promote coexistence and civic use of the square.
The works also include the partial renewal of public lighting and drainage, as well as the adaptation of road signage and traffic lights to the new circulation scheme. In addition, new litter bins, bicycle parking, and the renewal of the surrounding trees will be installed.
This project is part of the municipal strategy for the redevelopment of the centre of Badalona, whose main axis is the calming of Francesc Layret street and the redistribution of mobility to prioritise walking and public transport, while creating new public spaces for residents.
The works, which will last five months, will affect circulation in the area, so the City Council recommends drivers use alternative routes and pay attention to temporary signage. Neighbours in the area will receive detailed information about the planned road closures and diversions.
