Criminal offences in Esplugues de Llobregat fell by 9.7% between January and June 2026, with 1,357 criminal acts, 145 fewer than the previous year. Mayor Eduard Sanz attributes this to community policing and video surveillance.
Esplugues de Llobregat has recorded a 9.7% decrease in criminal offences during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year. This was announced by the City Council following the Local Security Board meeting held last Thursday, 23 July, at the Espai Baronda.
Between January and June, 1,357 criminal acts were recorded, 145 fewer than the 1,502 in the first half of 2025. The Mayor of Esplugues, Eduard Sanz, chaired the meeting and highlighted the positive trend: "The positive evolution of the first half encourages us to continue strengthening prevention and presence on the streets, with measures such as community policing, night watch services, and the deployment of video surveillance cameras."
The decrease in crime represents a change in trend compared to the increase recorded during the second half of 2025. In four of the first six months of the year, the number of crimes was lower than in the same month of 2025, with particularly significant drops in May and June.
However, in the accumulated total for the last twelve months (July 2025 to June 2026), 3,111 offences have been recorded, a 1.7% increase compared to the previous period. The City Council explains that this rise is mainly due to a spike in thefts from vehicles during the second half of 2025, which still affects the year-on-year comparison.
By crime type, notable reductions include violent or intimidating thefts (-16%), burglaries in homes (-39.4%), and burglaries in establishments (-60.4%). These figures reflect an improvement in citizen security, according to the council.
The Local Police of Esplugues has significantly increased its activity. During the first half of the year, it managed 9,087 services, compared to 6,530 in the same period of 2025, representing a 39.2% increase. The municipal government links this rise to the growth of initiated services (+70.2%) and planned services (+57.4%).
Police presence on the streets has also been reinforced. Surveillance operations in neighbourhoods and specific areas, as well as preventive patrols, have increased from 477 to 856, an increase of nearly 80%.
The deployment of community policing has resulted in 1,035 services carried out during the first six months of the year, compared to just 103 in the same period of 2025. The City Council believes that this close work is key to prevention and building community trust.
In terms of traffic, accidents have decreased by 22%, from 209 to 163. Incidents with victims have reduced from 80 to 70, and the number of seriously injured persons has dropped from 12 to 3. No fatalities have been recorded during this period, which is a positive statistic for road safety in the municipality.
Mayor Sanz highlighted "the coordination and joint work of the Local Police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, and other security bodies, essential for providing a more effective response and improving safety in the neighbourhoods."
Looking ahead, the City Council plans to maintain and intensify preventive measures, with special attention to video surveillance and police presence on the streets, to consolidate the downward trend in crime in Esplugues.
