The Arts Santa Mònica centre, located in the heart of La Rambla in Barcelona, has launched 'Solar Index', a shaded and relaxing space that is part of the city's network of climate refuges. The installation, designed by the collective Naked Space, is free and accessible to all.

Barcelona now has a new point to combat heatwaves. The Arts Santa Mònica centre, situated on La Rambla, has implemented 'Solar Index', a climate refuge that transforms its terrace into a livable space with shade, relaxation, and free wifi connectivity.

The installation is the work of the art and design collective Naked Space, winners of the annual ephemeral architecture competition organised by the centre. Their proposal reacts to sunlight to protect against UV rays, creating a cool and welcoming environment during the hottest months.

The space is integrated into Barcelona's network of climate refuges and is also part of the community project 'Raval Estiu Educatiu', which brings together places in the neighbourhood where locals, especially children and young people, can seek refuge from the heat and engage in activities such as reading, playing, or exercising.

In addition to the outdoor terrace, the refuge includes the Sala Bar as an indoor space. Both areas are open to the public for free and are accessible, with wifi available for those who wish to work or relax.

The Arts Santa Mònica has received the Environmental Quality Guarantee Distinction (DGQA) in the category of visual arts and cultural centres, awarded by the Department of Climate Action, certifying its commitment to sustainability.

The 'Solar Index' installation will be operational throughout the summer, providing relief from the extreme temperatures the city is experiencing. Interested individuals can visit from Monday to Sunday during the centre's opening hours.
