The sky of Castelldefels will darken next Wednesday, August 12, with a total solar eclipse, a phenomenon not seen in these lands for over a century. According to calculations from the National Astronomical Observatory, the eclipse will begin at 19:35 hours and reach its maximum at 20:29, with the Sun about 4 degrees above the horizon.
The maximum obscuration expected in the municipality will be 99.95%, a percentage that will leave the sky almost dark for a few moments. The phenomenon will end at 21:20 hours, although from Castelldefels it will only be observable until 20:54, when the Sun sets below the horizon.
This will be the first total solar eclipse visible in Catalonia since 1905, and the next one will not be visible until the year 2180. To enjoy it safely, Biblioplatja Carme Romaní, located on the beach, will offer a special activity starting at 19:00 hours with ISO 12312-2 approved glasses for the first people who arrive, with limited units available.
Direct observation of the Sun without protection can cause serious and irreversible eye injuries. Therefore, experts recommend using only specific eclipse glasses that bear the CE mark, indicate compliance with the ISO 12312-2 standard, identify the manufacturer, and are in good condition, without scratches or defects.
