Next Wednesday, August 12, Manresa will witness a solar eclipse with a maximum coverage of 99.4% of the solar disc, peaking at 20:28 hours. The Guàrdia Urbana will enhance surveillance to avoid overcrowding at access points to the city's high vantage points.
The Manresa City Council recommends that citizens walk to the high points and viewpoints of the city to observe the solar eclipse next Wednesday, August 12. Although the phenomenon will not be total in the capital of Bages, the Guàrdia Urbana will strengthen surveillance to prevent possible saturation of private vehicles and parking issues on access roads.
In Manresa, the eclipse will begin at 19:34 hours and reach its peak at 20:28 hours, with a maximum coverage of 99.4% of the solar disc. There will not be total darkness, a privilege reserved for areas in southern Catalonia: the Tarragona regions and part of Lleida will be the scene of an unprecedented event in the country since August 30, 1905, which will not be repeated until November 17, 2180.
The Guàrdia Urbana recommends that those travelling south of the country plan their journey in advance. For those staying in the city, prioritise mobility on foot. The force will also monitor access to elevated areas such as the Santa Caterina tower, a usual observation point.
Eye protection recommendations
No matter where you look from, a solar eclipse is a phenomenon that should be viewed with the utmost caution, as looking directly at the Sun without proper protection can cause serious and irreversible eye injuries. The City Council insists that only specific glasses for eclipse observation should be used.
These glasses must have the CE marking, indicate compliance with the ISO 12312-2 standard, identify the manufacturer or importer, and be in good condition, without scratches, holes or defects. It is recommended to purchase them from specialised and trusted establishments.
You should never observe the eclipse with conventional sunglasses, X-rays, tinted glasses, CDs or homemade filters. Nor with telescopes, binoculars, cameras or mobile phones without approved solar filters placed in front of the lens, as this could burn the device's sensor or cause eye damage.
Next Wednesday, the skies of Manresa will offer an almost total astronomical spectacle. The municipal recommendation is clear: walk to the viewpoints, bring the appropriate protection, and enjoy the phenomenon safely.
