Barcelona introduces 10 new intercity bus stops on Diagonal

From July 27, Barcelona's Diagonal avenue will have 10 new intercity bus stops to ease congestion at the current ones, which had up to 40 lines at 13 points.

Barcelona's Diagonal avenue, one of the busiest transport corridors in the Catalan capital, will see a reorganisation of intercity bus stops on July 27. This measure, resulting from an agreement between the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat, aims to alleviate the congestion currently experienced at the existing stops, which serve more than 1,800 daily journeys.

Until now, the 40 intercity bus lines crossing the Diagonal were concentrated at just 13 stopping points, leading to vehicle congestion and long waits for users. With the new distribution, the number of stops will increase to 23, of which 10 are newly created. The goal is for no stop to handle more than 20 lines, thus improving flow and reducing waiting times.

The new stops are located in three key areas of the Les Corts district: Maria Cristina, Palau Reial, and Zona Universitària. In Maria Cristina, three new points will be added, bringing the total to eight; in Palau Reial, three more will be added, making six; and in Zona Universitària, four will be incorporated, reaching seven stops. The two existing stops on Avenida Pius XII will remain unchanged.

The redistribution does not involve changes to the routes of the lines, as the new stops are located just a few metres from the current locations. Thus, the impact on travellers will be minimal, although it is recommended to check the new layout before the first journey.

The lines affected by the change correspond to the corridors of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Martorell, Vallirana, Sant Vicenç dels Horts, Corbera, Castellbisbal, Terrassa, Garraf, Costa Dorada, Igualada, Vilafranca, Reus, Manresa, and Olesa. These services connect Barcelona with municipalities in Baix Llobregat, Vallès Occidental, Alt Penedès, Anoia, Bages, and Tarragona.

In recent weeks, horizontal signage has been completed and new bus stop posts have been installed. In the coming days, shelters will be placed at those points where they do not yet exist, to provide protection for users.

This action addresses a chronic problem of congestion at the Diagonal stops, where the high concentration of buses created queues and occupied excessive public space. With this expansion, it is expected that the service will be more agile and efficient, benefiting the thousands of travellers who use these lines daily.

For residents of Barcelona and the metropolitan area, the change will improve the travel experience, with fewer crowds and a more even distribution of buses. Authorities recommend staying alert to the new signage and checking the updated stop maps.
