The National Police have detained a fourth youth at El Prat airport accused of participating in at least six random group assaults in the Eixample district of Barcelona, which took place in the early hours of July 5. The arrest occurred last Tuesday, July 21, at passport control, as the suspect arrived from Morocco after first fleeing to the Canary Islands.
According to sources close to the case, the Mossos d'Esquadra had issued a search and capture order against this young man, who was the only one of the alleged assailants still to be located. With this arrest, four individuals have now been detained, while two others have been reported but not arrested.
The assaults went viral on social media, where the assailants themselves recorded the actions with their mobile phones. The Mossos have confirmed six attacks, mostly in the Eixample, which caused minor injuries to the victims. The aim, according to the Catalan police, was to gain notoriety and impact on social media.
The first three arrests were made on Thursday, July 16, as a result of an investigation that included the analysis of the circulated images, witness statements, and the collaboration of private security in nightlife venues. The detainees are accused of crimes against moral integrity and minor injuries.
The arrest at El Prat concludes the search phase for the alleged perpetrators, although the investigation remains open to clarify all the facts and any potential new cases. Authorities do not rule out the possibility of more victims who have yet to report.
This case has caused alarm in Barcelona, particularly in the Eixample district, where residents and shopkeepers have expressed their concern for safety. The Mossos have increased surveillance in the area and remind the importance of reporting any assault.
