The Municipal Council of Parets has unanimously approved the cession of land on Carrer de la Salut for the Besòs Tordera Consortium to install water quality and sanitation monitoring devices.
The ordinary Municipal Council meeting of the Parets Town Hall, held this Wednesday, July 29, gave the green light to a collaboration agreement with the Besòs Tordera Consortium for monitoring treated water quality. The agreement, unanimously approved by all municipal groups, involves the cession of a small piece of municipal land located on Carrer de la Salut.
The supramunicipal body will install a cabin equipped with various measuring devices that will allow real-time data collection on water quality and the state of the sanitation system. This action is part of improving the efficiency of the urban water cycle and the digitalisation of wastewater treatment systems.
Through an underground hydraulic channel and the control instruments located in the cabin, the Besòs Tordera Consortium will be able to collect more precise and continuous data on wastewater studies. This information will be key to optimising the operation of the local treatment plant and ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
During the same plenary session, the provisional population figure for Parets as of January 1, 2026, was also approved. According to the municipal register, the municipality has 19,052 inhabitants, of which 9,530 are men and 9,522 are women. The population has experienced a slight decrease compared to the previous year, with 1,197 new registrations and 1,240 cancellations during 2025.
The demographic data indicate that throughout 2025, there were 121 deaths and 109 births, which explains the negative natural balance. These figures are relevant for planning municipal services such as education, healthcare, and social policies.
In the motions section, the council reported on four proposals approved in the previous Spokespersons' Board. The first, presented by the governing team, is a motion of support for workers in the chemical industry to access a reduced retirement coefficient. The measure calls for an early retirement system for this group, similar to those already in place for sectors such as mining, maritime workers, or firefighters, given the toxic and dangerous working conditions they face.
A motion from Ara Parets pel Canvi-ERC-AM regarding sovereign energy transition was also approved. The text urges the municipal government to submit objections to the Territorial Sectoral Plan for Renewable Energies of Catalonia (PLATER) and calls for a distributed energy model that is territorially cohesive and respectful of the landscape and agricultural land. The motion proposes utilising industrial rooftops and urban spaces for the implementation of renewable energies.
In the same vein, the municipal group Sumem Esquerres a Parets presented another motion regarding the PLATER, requesting a temporary suspension of the plan to review its content, greater participation from municipalities and the territory, protection of natural spaces and agricultural land, and the use of industrial estate rooftops and spaces within the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Finally, a motion from Ara Parets pel Canvi-ERC-AM regarding the ethical, responsible, and safe use of artificial intelligence in the Parets Town Hall was reported. The text demands that the council ensures data protection and establishes that decisions affecting citizens are not delegated to AI systems. Furthermore, it calls for maintaining human oversight in files created with AI and prohibits the use of this technology to create creative content that replaces human work.
The agreement with the Besòs Tordera Consortium represents a step forward in the sustainable management of water in the municipality. The residents of Parets will benefit from more thorough monitoring of treated water quality, which contributes to environmental protection and public health. The installation works for the control cabin are expected in the coming months.
