Jordi Guirado, a Vox councillor in Sant Cugat del Vallès, has posted homophobic messages on Instagram against users who criticised the Spanish national team. Questions like "how did you explain to your parents that you were gay?" have sparked outrage.
The Vox councillor in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Jordi Guirado, has ignited controversy by responding with homophobic comments to Instagram users who criticised a video from his party. In the original post, Vox accused the municipal government of failing to install a giant screen to watch the final of the Spanish national team's World Cup match. In response to the criticism, Guirado chose to disqualify his interlocutors by referencing their sexual orientation.
"Oriol, how did you manage to explain to your parents that you were gay?", the councillor wrote to one user. In another exchange, he asked: "Since when did you start noticing your homosexual tendency?" Screenshots shared on social media show up to a dozen similar messages, such as "Miquel, when was the first time you became aware of your homosexuality?" or a simple "you are gay" accompanied by laughing emojis.
A Public Official Who Trivialises Homosexuality
The messages were posted from Guirado's personal account, which he uses as a representative of the party. The councillor's attitude has been described as "particularly serious" by various LGTBI associations, given that he is a public official. "Turning sexual orientation into an object of mockery from an institutional position is unacceptable," sources from the Observatory Against Homophobia stated.
Some of the users who received the comments had also insulted Guirado and Vox, but the councillor chose to respond with repeated references to homosexuality. The expressions have generated a flood of criticism on social media, where many are calling for his resignation. The Sant Cugat City Council, governed by a left-wing tripartite coalition, has yet to make an official statement.
Context of Far-Right Violence
The controversy comes just two days after journalist and writer Fonsi Loaiza reported a brutal assault in San Fernando (Cádiz). According to his account, the attackers labelled him as a "red" and "runner-up" before beating him, leaving him with several facial injuries. Loaiza attributed the attack to "far-right violence", although the police investigation is still ongoing.
Residents of Sant Cugat have expressed their disgust at Guirado's comments. "It is outrageous that a public representative mocks people's sexual orientation," a local resident told this newspaper. The LGTBI+ association of Vallès Occidental has announced it will file a formal complaint with the City Council and the Prosecutor's Office for hate crimes.
So far, the councillor has not retracted or apologised. His original messages remain visible on his Instagram profile. Public and political pressure is growing, and it is possible that the municipal plenary will address the issue in the next session.
