FC Barcelona footballer Dani Olmo, in an interview with Diari de Terrassa, claims that Argentine coaching staff member Roberto 'Ratón' Ayala did not show sincere regret for the punch he threw after the 2026 World Cup final.
Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo has broken his silence regarding the incident he experienced with Roberto 'Ratón' Ayala after the 2026 World Cup final. In an interview granted to Diari de Terrassa, the FC Barcelona player asserted that the apologies offered by the member of the Argentine national team's coaching staff were insincere.
“Someone who confesses to being regretful but justifies a punch by claiming it was a response to something said, is surely not regretful, because they are not being truthful. I didn’t say anything to him, so I don’t need him to apologise,” Olmo stated.
The punch, which occurred during the celebrations following Spain's victory, was one of the most discussed episodes after the final whistle. Spain secured its second World Cup title, but the celebration was marred by unsportsmanlike conduct attributed to members of the Albiceleste, including an altercation between Nahuel Molina and Rodri.
Olmo, a native of Terrassa, wanted to make it clear that he did not provoke the altercation. “I didn’t say anything to him,” he insisted, denying reports that suggested a prior exchange of words. The Barça player believes Ayala attempted to justify his behaviour instead of owning up to it.
Beyond the controversy, Olmo called for responsibility among footballers as public figures. “What truly defines us is not the mistake, but the courage to admit it with humility, truth, and dignity. When my children, my family, and so many fans watch the match, I want them to be proud of how we compete, how we win, and above all, of our behaviour,” he affirmed.
The Spanish international prefers to focus on the sporting achievement. “What really matters is that we have experienced an incredible World Cup, that the world has seen it, and that we are world champions after so much hard work,” Olmo concluded.
