The 30-metre pontoon arrives at the Pont del Petroli to facilitate rehabilitation after damage from Storm Gloria in 2020. The project, with a budget of €4.08 million, enhances the resilience of the iconic pier.
Badalona has taken a fundamental step in the recovery of the Pont del Petroli with the arrival and anchoring of a pontoon that will allow for the most complex rehabilitation tasks to be carried out from the sea. This floating platform, measuring 30 metres long by 18 wide, was towed from the Port of Badalona to its final location, one and a half kilometres from the starting point, where it has been secured to the seabed with four 20-metre columns to ensure stability throughout the intervention, according to sources from the Badalona City Council.
Decisive progress in the rehabilitation of the Pont del Petroli
The works, which began in May, are now entering the most visible phase following the severe damage caused by Storm Gloria in 2020. The project has a total budget of €4.08 million provided by the City Council and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), and its completion is expected by the end of 2026.
In the coming days, the demolition of the most affected sections, removal of the old platform, and extraction of damaged piles will take place. Subsequently, the damaged sections will be reconstructed and a new platform designed to offer superior resistance against future storms will be installed, the local council reported.
Technical innovation and structural improvements for the iconic pier
The second deputy mayor, Daniel Gràcia, highlighted that this stage will allow for the assembly of prefabricated pieces out of the water, advancing the recovery of Badalona's symbol. Meanwhile, the manager of the AMB, Ramon Torra, emphasised the technical complexity of carrying out work in the middle of the sea and the importance of the pontoon in facilitating the tasks.
The new platform is based on studies from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) to reduce the impact of wave action. The structure, with an improved hydrodynamic design, will be supported by eleven piles anchored twelve metres deep. Additionally, the rehabilitation will include the repair and protection of existing beams and the renewal of the pavement, railings, and lighting, according to municipal sources.
With this phase, the Pont del Petroli moves towards its total recovery, a space highly valued by the residents of Badalona, which has been closed since the storm of 2020. The completion of this work will restore one of the most emblematic points of the coastline, better prepared to withstand future climatic adversities.
The works will continue in the coming months with constant monitoring to minimise the impact on the environment and ensure the safety of users when the pier reopens. The City Council has confirmed that it will keep the public informed about the progress and timelines of the rehabilitation.
