The Mercat de Sant Ildefons in Cornellà de Llobregat will not open its doors throughout the month of August. The Cornellà City Council has announced the temporary closure of the facility to carry out improvement works on the electrical installation, a project that has an investment of over €450,000.
The market will operate normally until Saturday, August 1. From that day on, customers will need to seek alternatives for their shopping, as the premises will remain closed for the entire month. The municipal forecast is that the market will reopen on Thursday, September 3, during its usual hours.
The works aim to update the low voltage electrical installation and centralise the meters for the stalls and warehouses. Until now, each stall had an individual meter, installed since the market's inauguration. Centralisation will allow for more efficient management of the supply and facilitate future maintenance.
The Cornellà City Council has emphasised that this is a necessary investment to ensure the safety and operability of the facility. The works have been scheduled for August, a month of lower commercial activity, to minimise disruption to traders and residents.
During August, other municipal services in Cornellà will maintain their activity, albeit with adjusted hours. The Citizen Attention Office will be open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 13:30 and from 16:30 to 19:30, with prior appointment recommended. The Guàrdia Urbana offers a permanent 24-hour service and can be contacted at 93 377 14 15, as well as 112 for emergencies.
The recycling centre on Carrer Progrés and the mobile recycling centre will maintain their usual hours, while the Re-Parades will only open in the mornings during August and will resume normal hours in September. The Xarxa de Biblioteques de Cornellà will keep three facilities open: the Central Library will be open Monday to Friday from 15:30 to 20:30; the Marta Mata and Sant Ildefons libraries will open Monday to Thursday from 15:30 to 20:30 and on Fridays from 9:30 to 14:30.
The closure of the Mercat de Sant Ildefons coincides with the holiday period for many residents, although the council recommends planning purchases in advance. The market traders have been informed of the work schedule and the support measures planned during the closure.
The electrical improvement project is part of a plan to renew municipal facilities in Cornellà. The council has reminded that these actions are necessary to adapt the facilities to current regulations and improve energy efficiency.
