The Vallès Occidental County Council has completed the works to adapt the Ripoll river path, which connects six municipalities. In Montcada i Reixac, 900 metres of new route and a charging point for electric bicycles have been established.
The new Ripoll river path is now a reality in Montcada i Reixac. This Monday, the 900-metre stretch running along carrer del Vapor, between carrers del Gas and de la Química, in the Ferreria industrial estate, became operational. This initiative is part of the project 'The river, weaving threads of life', promoted by the Vallès Occidental County Council with funding from the European Next Generation EU programme.
The initiative connects six municipalities in Vallès Occidental: Montcada i Reixac, Ripollet, Barberà del Vallès, Sabadell, Castellar del Vallès, and Sant Llorenç Savall. The total route is approximately 40 kilometres, linking the natural parks of Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac and Collserola, and connecting with the Besòs river.
The path is designed for both hikers and cyclists. From the source of the Ripoll to Castellar del Vallès, it is exclusively for walkers, while from Sant Feliu del Racó to the mouth at the Besòs, it is also suitable for bicycles.
In Montcada i Reixac, the route runs along the right bank of the riverbed, downstream. The works have included improvements to the surface, drainage and runoff water management, stabilisation of various sections, and the installation of safety elements.
In addition to the path, six charging points for electric bicycles have been installed along the river axis. In Montcada i Reixac, the charging point is located at the entrance of the Estadi Municipal de la Ferreria. These facilities aim to promote sustainable mobility, facilitate the daily use of electric bicycles, and encourage cycle tourism.
The project is financed by the Sustainable Tourism Plans in Destinations of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with funds from the European Union – Next Generation EU. The County Council has collaborated with the municipalities of the six involved towns.
For the residents of Montcada i Reixac, the new path represents an improvement in green connectivity and an additional option for outdoor sports. Furthermore, the electric bike charging point facilitates sustainable travel within the municipality and to neighbouring towns.
The works were completed in July 2026 and are now operational. It is expected that the complete route will help to enhance the natural and cultural heritage linked to the Ripoll river, as well as promote sustainable tourism in the region.
