The City Council of Cornellà de Llobregat has launched the 'Heatwave' initiative to prevent risks associated with heatwaves, monitoring elderly individuals living alone and providing practical advice for the public.
The City Council of Cornellà de Llobregat has initiated the 'Heatwave' campaign to tackle the high temperatures this summer and protect the health of residents, especially the most vulnerable groups. The initiative includes basic advice on hydration, sun protection, and maintaining cool spaces, as well as a special monitoring device for elderly individuals living alone.
According to municipal sources, nearly 6,100 people over the age of 75 who live alone or with another person of similar age will be the focus of this preventive action. The Department of Social Action and the Red Cross of Cornellà are collaborating on the initiative, offering direct information, follow-up calls, and personalised support to mitigate the harmful effects of heat.
The campaign is based on three fundamental pillars, summarised in the ABC of heat: A for air, B for drinking, and C for home. It is recommended to seek shade and cool refuges, avoid going out during peak sunlight hours, hydrate frequently even if not thirsty, and keep the home cool during the day by closing blinds and opening them at night to let in the breeze.
At the same time, the Urban Guard of Cornellà, along with the Mossos d'Esquadra, has launched a special summer security initiative. The aim is to increase police presence on the streets, especially in the city's industrial areas, which tend to see reduced activity during the summer months, and in residential communities to prevent illegal occupations.
Authorities are calling for citizen cooperation to detect possible incidents. If unknown individuals are seen entering and exiting a property or if noises are heard from usually empty flats, residents can call the Urban Guard directly at 93 377 14 15 or alert through the municipal Security App.
The council has also disseminated a list of recommendations for holidays: do not leave valuables in sight, secure doors and windows, inform only trusted individuals of your absence, do not announce your departure on social media or answering machines, and do not hide keys in outdoor spaces. In case of signs of burglary, it is advised not to touch anything and to call the police immediately.
The 'Heatwave' campaign is part of the municipal public health strategy for the summer, with special attention to elderly individuals living alone, a group that in Cornellà exceeds 6,000 people. The monitoring device includes periodic calls and personalised visits to ensure their well-being during episodes of intense heat.
