The master winemaker Antoni Falgueras will be responsible for kicking off Barcelona's major festival, La Mercè, on September 23. The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, announced this Wednesday the appointment during the presentation of the first news about the celebration.
Falgueras (Barcelona, 1948) is the fourth generation at the helm of the historic Celler de Gelida, located in the Sants neighbourhood. He will be accompanied during the announcement by his daughter, the sommelier and communicator Meritxell Falgueras.
La Mercè 2026 will be celebrated from September 23 to 27 and will extend to new venues, such as the Glòries square, Sarrià square, and Comas square, with the aim of bringing the festival closer to the ten districts of the city.
Among the new features is the debut of the new Porta de l'Infern, which will host the correfoc, and a grand show in Park Güell, resulting from the collaboration between the City Council and the Generalitat, which will merge traditional music and dances with contemporary proposals. This event commemorates the Year of Gaudí and the centenary of the park.
The edition will culminate on Sunday, September 27, with the traditional Piromusical, which for the first time will take place at Bogatell beach.
The official poster has also been unveiled, created by visual artist Cinta Vidal, and it has been confirmed that Shanghai will be the guest of honour city. The Chinese city thus becomes the first Asian guest in the history of La Mercè, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the twinning between Barcelona and Shanghai.
For the residents of Barcelona, La Mercè is one of the most anticipated events of the year. With the expansion to new spaces, the aim is for more people to enjoy the events without having to travel to the centre.
The announcement by Antoni Falgueras promises to be a tribute to the city's winemaking tradition and popular culture. The event will take place on September 23 at 19:00 in Sant Jaume square.
