The Barcelona City Council will start on July 27 the comprehensive rehabilitation works of the Pont de Marina, with a budget of €6 million and a timeframe of 14 months.

On July 27, the Barcelona City Council will begin the comprehensive rehabilitation works of the Pont de Marina, one of the city's most emblematic road infrastructures, built between 1926 and 1928. The project, which is part of the Pla Endreça for public space maintenance, has an estimated budget of €6 million and an execution period of 14 months, until the autumn of 2027.

The viaduct, which spans the railway tracks of the Nord station, connects the Eixample with Sant Martí and allows the continuity of carrer Marina between Alí Bei and Avenida Meridiana. The rehabilitation aims to ensure its durability, structural safety, and functionality, respecting the original design and restoring the historical ornamental elements.

According to technical inspections in recent years, the bridge is structurally satisfactory, with no deficiencies compromising its immediate safety. However, mild to moderate pathologies related to material aging, moisture infiltration through joints, and deficient drainage systems have been detected, as well as superficial concrete degradation, oxidation of metal elements, and deterioration of ornamental artificial stone.

The project will be executed in phases to minimize impacts on traffic and pedestrians. Although the council has not detailed the exact schedule of closures, the phased planning will allow for partial mobility in the area. The works also include the restoration of ornamental elements, which are part of the bridge's heritage value.

The Pont de Marina, which crosses the Parc de l'Estació del Nord, the ADIF tracks, and the sports facilities of CEM Fort Pienc, is a key piece in the city's sea-mountain connection. Its rehabilitation is part of the Comprehensive Maintenance Plan (PMI), which prioritizes the conservation of large road structures.

“The intervention is designed to preserve an infrastructure of great urban and symbolic value, following conservation criteria and respecting the original design,” municipal sources state.

The 14-month timeframe places the completion of the works in the autumn of 2027, just before the bridge's centenary, which will be celebrated in 2028. This intervention is one of the most significant during the mandate in renewing large road structures in Barcelona.

For the residents of Eixample and Sant Martí, the rehabilitation will mean an improvement in the safety and aesthetics of the bridge, although during the works, detours and specific impacts should be anticipated. The City Council recommends staying alert to official notices regarding traffic closures and mobility alternatives.

The €6 million investment comes from the PMI, which finances comprehensive maintenance actions in urban infrastructures. The project includes structural reinforcement, new waterproofing, and restoration of ornamental elements, aiming to extend the bridge's useful life.

The Pont de Marina was built to span the railway tracks and improve the connection between Eixample and Sant Martí, linking the sea and the mountain. Today, in addition to its road function, it is a heritage element that is part of the urban landscape of the city.

The works will officially begin on July 27, although preparatory work may start a few days earlier. The City Council has assured that the public will be kept informed about the progress of the works and any potential traffic impacts.
