Collision on Rambla Catalunya in Barcelona: a woman in critical condition and a minor injured

A car has hit two people on Rambla Catalunya in Barcelona, at the height of Aragó street. A woman has been critically injured and a minor, less severely.

A woman is in critical condition and a minor has sustained less serious injuries after being struck by a car on Rambla Catalunya in Barcelona, at number 260, corner with Aragó street. The incident, which occurred around 14:30 on Tuesday, has mobilised three ambulances from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), which attended to both victims at the scene.

The woman, whose condition is more serious, has been urgently transferred to the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. The minor, with less severe injuries, has been evacuated to the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Esplugues de Llobregat. SEM sources have confirmed that both have received immediate specialised care.

The Mossos d'Esquadra have indicated that the collision was due to a traffic accident without criminal motivation, so the investigation has been handed over to the Guardia Urbana de Barcelona. The Traffic Accident Unit of this body has drawn up the report and taken statements from several witnesses, as well as from the driver of the vehicle involved.

According to the initial investigations, the driver is an elderly man who reportedly lost control of the car as the victims were crossing the street. After the impact, the man managed to stop the vehicle and exited it, being confronted by some people present in the area, according to eyewitness accounts.

The accident has caused moments of great tension among pedestrians in the city's nerve centre, rekindling memories of the mass collision on La Rambla in Barcelona on August 17, 2017, which will soon mark its ninth anniversary. However, authorities insist that this is an isolated traffic incident.

Emergency services have closed part of Aragó street to facilitate rescue efforts and care for the victims, which has affected traffic and public transport in the area. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes until normalcy is restored.
