W Barcelona Hotel, the iconic 'sail hotel' of the Barcelona coastline, has unveiled the 267 renovated rooms of its main building. The refurbishment, which includes an investment of over 80 million euros, will continue in autumn with the common areas and the rest of the floors.
W Barcelona Hotel, one of the icons of the skyline of the Catalan capital, has completed the first phase of its ambitious renovation. From this week, the 267 rooms and suites on floors 7 to 25 of La Vela, the main building designed by Ricardo Bofill, now showcase a new design by the Rockwell Group. The intervention, which began a year ago, has involved an outlay of over 80 million euros by Marriott International and Nueva Bocana Barcelona.
The renovation does not stop here. According to a statement from the hotel, work will begin in November on the remaining rooms, up to the sixth floor, and in the public spaces. All work is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027. The aim is to completely modernise the establishment, which opened its doors in 2009 and has since become a benchmark for luxury and design in the city.
The redesign of the rooms has been carried out by Rockwell Group, a regular studio for Marriott International. The firm has sought to reflect a new hospitality philosophy, more connected to the destination and with a focus on well-being and authenticity. For example, the two new Onada Terrace Suites, with terraces overlooking the sea, have been conceived by the External Reference studio to enhance creativity and the local experience.
David Rockwell, founder of Rockwell Group, explained that Barcelona is a city where architecture, landscape, and daily life coexist extraordinarily. Therefore, his goal was to create spaces that reflect that unique energy, connecting local identity with a contemporary experience. The project is inspired by the history of the ancient Island of Maians, a small island that was separated from Barcelona for centuries before integrating into its coastline.
The decoration of the new rooms abandons the minimalist and white style that characterised the hotel since its opening. They now opt for a more intimate and serene contrast, in contrast to the lively social atmosphere of the common areas. The hotel maintains its avant-garde spirit linked to design, music, and social life, but evolves towards a greater local essence and a philosophy of well-being.
The total refurbishment of W Barcelona is framed within the extension of the hotel management agreement signed with the Port of Barcelona until 2041. The investment of over 80 million euros will allow the hotel to continue competing in the luxury big league, where being in top shape is essential. The first phase has already concluded, and guests can enjoy the new rooms. The second phase, which will begin in autumn, will affect the common areas and the rest of the rooms.
For hotel guests, the renovation means an enhanced experience, with cozier spaces and a deeper connection to Barcelona. The completion of the works is expected in 2027, when the hotel will showcase its completely renewed image. In the meantime, the establishment remains operational, with works planned to minimise disruptions to guests.
