Between January and June 2026, 74,350 crimes were recorded in Barcelona, an 11.2% decrease compared to the previous year. Thefts and repeat offences lead the decline.
The data from the first half of 2026 in Barcelona reflects a significant improvement in public safety. According to the report presented by the Local Security Board, between January and June, 74,350 criminal incidents were recorded, representing an 11.2% decrease compared to the same period last year.
The most notable decline has occurred in thefts, which have fallen by 21.1%. Crimes linked to repeat offences have also decreased by 15.9%, within the framework of the Kanpai Plan, a police strategy focused on criminal recidivism. The Urban Guard of Barcelona has intensified its activity during this semester: it has managed over 51,000 administrative incidents and processed 72 cases through the new Office Attached to the Prosecutor's Office.
In the area of gender-based violence, the force has carried out 340 specialised actions to assist victims. Additionally, public space coexistence has been reinforced, and the municipal video surveillance network has been expanded as a preventive tool.
Incidents involving knives have decreased by 20.9%, and associated violent robberies have fallen by 29.1%. Reports of sexual assaults have dropped by 9.4%, and gender-based violence crimes have decreased by 5.3%. Police and municipal services have maintained support and protection for victims.
However, the Local Security Board has highlighted some challenges. Hate crimes have increased by 64.3% compared to the same period last year. Furthermore, nine homicides have been recorded, three of which are related to organised crime. Five of the nine investigations have already been resolved with the arrest of the alleged perpetrators.
The Barcelona Victimisation Survey 2026 reinforces the positive trend. 23.2% of respondents reported having experienced a criminal incident in 2025, 5.4 points less than the previous year. The study also confirms an improvement in the perception of safety both in the city and in the neighbourhoods.
