The three-storey cloister of the Monastery of Pedralbes, the largest in Barcelona, will transform into a stage of light and sound at the end of July. The Lumina Divina show, an immersive and free intervention, will take place on the nights of July 24, 25, and 26, from 22:00 to 24:00, allowing visitors to stroll leisurely through the venue as the lighting and music transform the space.
This experience, commemorating the 700th anniversary of the monastery, does not require prior reservation. Each attendee will receive a luminous object and an explanatory leaflet, but there is no fixed route: the idea is for each person to discover the cloister at their own pace. The exhibition rooms and the medieval garden will remain closed, but the cloister, with its arches, columns, and capitals, will be the absolute star.
A Layered System for an Immersive Experience
The show is based on a layered activation system that combines ambient lighting, subtle projections, and directional sounds. Throughout the evening, a base layer will maintain a soft light and a discreet sound background. Intermittently, small activations lasting between 20 and 40 seconds will highlight specific points of the cloister, such as the capitals or the fountains, without breaking the overall atmosphere.
The climax will arrive unexpectedly: the entire cloister will activate like a living organism. The light will travel through the three galleries, progressively illuminating arches and columns. The cypress trees and the garden will be bathed in an ascending glow, while the central fountain and the Angel fountain will reflect the light like mirrors of the sky. The combination of architecture, nature, and water aims to make visible the invisible relationships that structure the space.
A Gothic Gem Celebrating Seven Centuries
The Monastery of Pedralbes, founded in 1327 by Queen Elisenda de Montcada, is one of the most important Gothic complexes in Barcelona. Its three-storey cloister, the largest in the city, stands out for its harmony and excellent state of preservation. This year, the monument celebrates its 700th anniversary with a special programme, of which Lumina Divina is a part.
For the residents of Barcelona, this is a unique opportunity to rediscover a Heritage space. General admission to the monastery costs 5 euros, but access is free on one Sunday each month.
