The Sitges Town Council has begun work on the first Mental Health Plan for the municipality, which will include a citizen participation process in September to gather residents' opinions on emotional well-being.
The Sitges Town Council, through the Public Health department, has initiated the development of the first Mental Health Plan for the municipality, a strategic tool aimed at diagnosing the reality of mental health and emotional well-being of the population, as well as defining municipal policies in this area for the coming years.
The plan is currently in an initial research phase. According to municipal sources, interviews are being conducted with local administration professionals, agents from other institutions, and entities linked to the well-being of individuals. This initial analysis is intended to identify existing needs and create a map of public and private resources related to mental health operating in the town, such as those from the Catalan Health Institute, the CAP, or various associations and foundations.
The first conclusions of the study are expected to be available in the autumn, while the complete Mental Health Plan is aimed to be finalized by early next year. The Public Health councillor, Eva Martín, has highlighted that “mental health is one of the major social challenges of the present and the future. According to the World Health Organization, one in four people will experience some form of mental health issue in their lifetime.”
Martín added that “with this Plan, we aim to have a rigorous document that allows us to promote public policies and make decisions that contribute to the emotional well-being of all citizens.”
Citizen participation in September
One of the pillars of the process will be the involvement of residents. During September, the Town Council will open a citizen participation process through a survey accessible to the entire population. The goal is to gain first-hand insight into the perceptions of Sitges residents regarding emotional well-being and their opinions on aspects of the municipality that may influence it, such as the environment, housing, work, care, or violence and discrimination.
The data collected will be completely anonymous and confidential. The councillor emphasized that “it is essential to listen to both professionals and the residents of Sitges, as their contributions will be key to defining a useful, realistic Plan tailored to the needs of the town.”
After the summer, municipal communication channels will inform how to participate in the survey. The information obtained will be essential to complete the study and establish actions that will address the main challenges identified in mental health in Sitges.
Mental health and emotional well-being, according to the Town Council, are essential elements for the quality of life of individuals, going beyond the absence of mental illness. They include the ability to face daily challenges, maintain satisfactory relationships, and actively participate in community life. Therefore, the council considers it a priority to have a tool that allows for planning actions to promote better health for all citizens.
The Sitges Mental Health Plan will become the roadmap for local policies in this area for the coming years, with the aim of improving the emotional well-being of the residents of the municipality.
