The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued warnings for extreme temperatures in the province of Barcelona for this Monday, where the mercury could rise to 40 degrees in parts of Vallès Occidental and Barcelonès. The alert, which affects the entire province, also includes the risk of severe storms with hail during the afternoon.
The Vallès and Barcelonès, the hottest areas
According to Aemet, maximums will exceed 35 degrees in almost the entire province of Barcelona, except for the mountainous areas inland. In cities like Terrassa, Sabadell, and Barcelona city, values close to 38-40 degrees are expected, particularly in the metropolitan area.
Nights will be tropical, with minimums not dropping below 22-24 degrees along the coast and pre-coastal areas, and could even remain at 25 in parts of Barcelonès. Winds will be light from the north and northeast along the coast, with moderate intervals.
Storms in the afternoon inland
During the afternoon, evolutionary cloudiness will form, leading to showers and storms in the interior of the province, especially in Vallès Oriental and Anoia. These storms could be locally strong, with very strong gusts of wind and hail, according to Aemet.
Dust will affect the southeast half of the Peninsula and the Balearics, but in the province of Barcelona, visibility will be good, although with some suspended dust coming from the south.
Recommendations for residents
In light of the forecast for extreme heat, the Barcelona City Council and other councils in the metropolitan area have activated alert protocols. The population is advised to avoid sun exposure during the peak hours of the day, drink plenty of water, and use sun protection.
In Terrassa, the council has announced that civic centres will remain open as climate shelters during the afternoon. In Sabadell and Rubí, cool spaces have also been set up for the most vulnerable individuals.
The Catalan Traffic Service has warned of possible traffic jams on the roads leading to the coast, where many Barcelonans will seek relief on the beaches. Caution is advised while driving and unnecessary travel should be avoided.
For Tuesday, Aemet forecasts a slight decrease in temperatures, although they will remain above 30 degrees in the province. The heatwave could extend until midweek, according to meteorological models.
