Sabadell joins Terrassa and Manresa to create a Comprehensive Cancer Center that will provide comprehensive oncological services to several regions of Catalonia.

The City Council of Sabadell, through the Parc Taulí University Hospital, has signed an agreement with the university hospitals of Terrassa and the Althaia healthcare network of Manresa to develop a Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC). This project focuses on providing integrated, coordinated, and patient-centred oncological care in the region.

Creation of an oncological territorial network in Sabadell and surroundings

The new CCC will serve the population of Vallès Occidental, Bages, Berguedà, Solsonès, Moianès, and Cerdanya, ensuring equitable access to specialised oncological services. According to sources from the Department of Health, the initiative aims to reduce inequalities in healthcare and bring resources closer to patients.

The hospitals of Sabadell, Terrassa, and Manresa will collaborate closely to improve care coordination and promote knowledge exchange. Specifically, users from Berguedà and Cerdanya will be able to access oncological services through Althaia in Manresa, which already serves these regions.

Impact on care quality and research

The networked working model will also facilitate cooperation in oncological research and innovation, enhancing the quality and efficiency of treatments. The signed agreement establishes a legal framework that will allow the center to be part of the European network of Comprehensive Cancer Centers.

This network, accredited by the European Union, aims for 90% of cancer patients to access a comprehensive center by 2030. In Catalonia, centres such as Campus Salut Bellvitge, Vall d’Hebron, and Clínic de Barcelona already have this accreditation, while others like Hospital Germans Trias and ICO Badalona are in the accreditation process.

Benefits for the residents of Sabadell and its surroundings

For the residents of Sabadell, this project means closer and more specialised access to oncological treatments, avoiding long journeys and improving quality of life. Additionally, coordination between hospitals will ensure that patients receive personalised and multidisciplinary care.

The Catalan Health Service is actively involved to ensure that the project aligns with public health planning and maintains equity and cohesion within the system. This model is expected to serve as an example for other regions and contribute to sustained improvements in the fight against cancer.

The agreement marks a turning point in oncological care in Sabadell and its metropolitan area, with a clear horizon towards excellence and innovation.

In the coming months, operational details will be defined, and initial actions will begin to launch the center, which promises to be a healthcare reference for the province of Barcelona.
