The Vilafranca del Penedès Town Council has installed a new information sign at the Pi de la Serreta, an exceptional specimen of white pine over 200 years old. The ADF La Carrerada has carried out a support watering to mitigate the effects of drought.
This week, the Vilafranca del Penedès Town Council has placed a new information sign next to the Pi de la Serreta, a white pine (Pinus halepensis) of exceptional dimensions located in the Serreta forest, near the boundary with Olèrdola. The aim is to raise awareness of the heritage, historical, and landscape value of this tree, considered one of the most emblematic in Penedès.
The specimen, which is believed to have once served as a boundary marker between the two municipalities, reaches a height of between 15 and 20 meters, a crown of over 20 meters in diameter, and a trunk circumference close to 5 meters. Its age is estimated to be over two centuries, and its characteristic wide and horizontal branching gives it a majestic appearance that has made it a landmark in the Penedès landscape.
The sign has been installed as part of the maintenance occupation plans for the natural environment of the Treball als Barris project, an initiative funded by the Public Employment Service of Catalonia. Coinciding with the installation, the Forest Defence Group (ADF) 315 La Carrerada has carried out a support watering to help the tree cope with the heat and drought conditions of summer. This extraordinary water contribution helps to reduce the water stress that unique trees can suffer during episodes of high temperatures.
The Vilafranca council has expressed gratitude for the collaboration of the landowner and ADF 315 La Carrerada, whose voluntary involvement is crucial for the conservation of Vilafranca's natural heritage and that of the entire Penedès region. The Pi de la Serreta thus joins other protected natural elements in the municipality that receive regular attention to ensure their survival.
Residents and visitors who approach the Serreta forest will now be able to learn, thanks to the new sign, the botanical and historical details of this centenary white pine.
