The Public Health Service of the Abrera Town Council has updated its advice to cope with high temperatures, with a heat warning activated this Wednesday, July 15, from 12 to 18 hours.

The Abrera Town Council, through its Public Health Service, has made available to residents a series of recommendations to avoid the adverse effects of heat, such as dehydration, exhaustion, or heat strokes. This measure coincides with the update of the weather warning issued by the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, which affects the municipality from 12 to 18 hours this Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

Excessive heat can pose a danger to health and exacerbate chronic illnesses or cause dehydration and exhaustion. If exposure to very high temperatures is prolonged, body temperature can rise to dangerous levels, leading to a heat stroke, a disorder with potentially serious consequences that requires immediate medical attention.

To cope with heat episodes, the council recommends using air conditioning or spending time in the cooler parts of the home, closing blinds where the sun shines directly during the day and opening them at night, and refreshing oneself frequently with showers or towels soaked in water.

When outside, it is important to wear a hat or breathable fabric headgear to protect the head, avoid direct sunlight, walk in shaded areas, use an umbrella at the beach, seek refuge in air-conditioned establishments, and carry water to drink frequently.

During car journeys, special care should be taken during the sunniest hours, keeping the vehicle cool with air conditioning or open windows, and parking in shaded areas or protecting it with sunshades.

At work, the Public Health Service reminds everyone to follow the preventive measures of the occupational risk prevention service of each company, drink a glass of cool water (10-12 °C) every 20 minutes, work outdoors in shaded areas whenever possible, rest in cool places, wear loose, light-coloured, and cool clothing that covers most of the body, and be well-rested, as working in heat requires more physical effort.

The most vulnerable individuals are infants, small children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses. To protect them, it is advised not to cover the stroller or pushchair of children when exposed to the sun, and never to leave children, frail individuals, or pets inside a car with the windows closed. If someone knows an elderly or sick person living alone, they should visit them at least twice a day and maintain frequent contact. If they are on medication, it is important to check with their doctor if it may affect thermoregulation and if it needs to be adjusted or changed.

Pets are also vulnerable to the effects of heat: fresh and clean water should be provided frequently, and direct sun exposure should be avoided.

In the event of a heat stroke, which manifests with discomfort, headache, dizziness, hot and dry skin, rapid breathing and heart rate, and alterations in mental state or behaviour (confusion, irritability, or delirium), the person should be moved away from the heat source, the surrounding temperature should be lowered, windows should be opened or a fan turned on, excess clothing should be removed, they should be wet with water, and 112 should be called.

The Abrera Town Council has disseminated a poster from the Barcelona Provincial Council with basic advice titled 'In the heat, protection', and reminds that as air temperature rises, the body stays cool through the evaporation of sweat, but if it is very hot and humid, the evaporation process slows down and body temperature can rise excessively. Excessive heat can harm health.
