From September 1 to 5, the CAE is organising a new edition of the Week of Street Games in the historic centre of Manresa, with free recreational activities for all ages.
The historic centre of Manresa will become a large play area from September 1 to 5 with the new edition of the Week of Street Games, organised by the CAE (Centre d'Acció Educativa). The initiative, which has been held for over twenty years, offers a free programme featuring board games, traditional games, cooperative games, skill games, and giant games, aiming to promote coexistence and social cohesion.
The director of the CAE, Nasi Muncunill Roca, highlighted during the presentation that "beyond entertainment, playing fosters cooperation, respect, creativity, decision-making, and the building of bonds, while also reclaiming public space as a place to share, coexist, and build community." The councillor for Childhood and Youth of the Manresa City Council, Isabel Sánchez Pulido, emphasised that the proposal contributes to making Manresa "a more educational, more participatory, and kinder city for children, young people, families, and the elderly."
This year's programme includes new features such as the return of the scavenger hunt, the Llibrejocs from the Casino Library, new oversized board game proposals, an activity dedicated to Mahjong, and the reorganisation of some play areas to offer a more diverse experience.
The inaugural activity will take place on Tuesday, September 1 at 5:30 PM in the Sant Domènec square with 'World Games' by the company El Burro dels Jocs, an interactive proposal of wooden games originating from different countries across the five continents. Each afternoon, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM, different squares in the old town will host specialised play areas. From 10:00 PM to 12:30 AM, the main square will once again be the meeting point for the traditional Game Nights, aimed at people aged 14 and over.
The programme is complemented by demonstrations, workshops, and activities led by experts and collaborating entities, such as the experimental games from Lab 0_6 of UManresa or Aualé with Lluís Pinyot. Additionally, the scavenger hunt 'Discover the Secret of the Game!' is back, inviting participants to discover the city through play and enter a draw for a board game.
The Week of Street Games is made possible thanks to the involvement of around thirty volunteers and 27 hired staff, as well as the collaboration of entities, companies, institutions, and professionals linked to the world of games, education, and culture. The CAE's Volunteer Coordinator, Eva Molina Òrrit, stated that "the initiative would not be possible without the volunteers, who create welcoming spaces, invite people to play, build trust, and make it possible for people of all ages to share experiences around play."
The event is supported by the Manresa City Council and the Department of Social Rights and Inclusion of the Generalitat de Catalunya. This edition collaborates with entities such as the Casino Library of Manresa, the CAE Game Club, Escacs Catalònia Club, Fundació Ampans, Fundació La Xarranca, Ludoteca Ludugurus – Creu Roja Manresa, UManresa Lab 0-6, and various companies in the gaming sector such as Asmodee, Devir, Maldito Games, among others.
