Comuns Baix Llobregat has launched a signature collection campaign to denounce the progressive centralisation of Sexual and Reproductive Health Care Services (ASSIR) in the region, which has led to a reduction in professionals and an increase in waiting lists.
The Sexual and Reproductive Health Care Services (ASSIR) of Baix Llobregat have lost gynaecology professionals in recent years, according to Comuns Baix Llobregat. The party has initiated a signature collection campaign to demand the restoration of these services in the primary care centres (CAP) of the region.
The complaint focuses on the progressive centralisation of the ASSIR, which has resulted in the disappearance of gynaecology consultations in several CAPs. This forces many women to travel to other municipalities for care, when they could previously receive it at their reference centre, according to Comuns.
Staff cuts in Cornellà and Martorell
The data handled by the party, from the Department of Health, shows a sustained loss of professionals in different ASSIR teams in the region over the last decade. In Cornellà de Llobregat, the number of gynaecologists is reported to have dropped from 16 to 7 between 2015 and 2025, while in Martorell the figure has decreased from 6 to 3.
One of the most critical cases is that of Olesa de Montserrat, where the ASSIR team has one midwife and 0.6 gynaecology professionals to care for nearly 25,000 adults. This lack of resources translates into delays of up to 80 days for a first visit, according to the complaint from Comuns.
A model in decline
The ASSIR were established as an evolution of the former family planning centres, aiming to provide comprehensive, preventive, and integrated care within the CAPs. However, Comuns asserts that the impact of cuts, lack of investment in public health, and post-pandemic reorganisation have weakened this model.
The party believes that this trend to concentrate resources in fewer locations poses a risk to the community function of the ASSIR, not only as medical care spaces but also for prevention, education, and support in sexual and reproductive health.
Signature collection and demands
With the signature collection campaign, Comuns Baix Llobregat demands the restoration of public, comprehensive, and local services in the CAPs of the region, with the necessary human and material resources. The initiative will be rolled out over the coming weeks throughout Baix Llobregat and will serve to convey the demand to the relevant institutions.
The party emphasises that sexual and reproductive health is a right that should not depend on a patient's place of residence or their ability to travel. Residents of Baix Llobregat who wish to support the campaign will be able to sign at designated points set up by Comuns in the municipalities of the region.
