El Prat de Llobregat Council reminds how to act when encountering a chick outside the nest and warns that it is prohibited to touch nests or eggs, with fines of up to €1,500.
The bird breeding season leaves every summer images of chicks on the ground, either due to an accidental fall or because they are practising their first flights. In response to this situation, the El Prat de Llobregat Council has disseminated a protocol of action to avoid unnecessary interference with urban wildlife.
The council insists that, before intervening, one must ensure that the animal truly needs help. If the chick is in good condition, the most advisable action is to relocate it to a safe nearby place, as the adults will continue to care for it.
On the other hand, if the bird is injured or the location is dangerous, it should be carefully picked up, placed in a well-ventilated box, and taken to the collaborating veterinarian: Clínica Veterinaria Milton, located at Avenida Once de Septiembre, 269, phone 93 478 30 91. However, it should be noted that from August 24 to September 6, 2026, both dates inclusive, this clinic will be closed for holidays.
As an alternative during those dates, the council points to the VET24 centre in Gavà, located at Calle de la Máquina 51, near the Barnasud shopping centre. If it is not possible to travel there, another option is to take the animal to the Environment Department of the council itself, located at Calle Mayor 2-4.
The council reminds that it is completely prohibited to intentionally disturb nests and take eggs or chicks from trees. This practice has already necessitated action on some occasions and is reportable, with penalties that can exceed €1,500.
Protecting local wildlife requires the involvement and awareness of all citizens. In case of any doubt, it is best to contact the Environment Department for instructions on how to proceed in each case.
