A 54-year-old man has lost his life this Friday after being struck while working on the renovation of the Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona.
A 54-year-old worker has died this Friday inside the renovation works of the Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona. The incident occurred shortly before 15:30, when the man suffered a blow that caused his death on the spot, according to the regional police.
Several units of the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Medical Emergency System (SEM) have been dispatched to the stadium. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the worker, but were unable to save his life.
Investigation sources have confirmed that the victim was a 54-year-old man. The Mossos' Investigation Unit has informed the Department of Business and Labour of the Generalitat, which will open an investigation to clarify the causes of the workplace accident. The investigating court in Barcelona has also been notified.
This workplace accident adds to other incidents that have occurred at the Camp Nou construction site since the start of its comprehensive renovation. The construction company Limak, awarded the project, made headlines last April for submitting a redundancy plan affecting 399 workers, with minimum compensation of €10,000.
Residents around the stadium have repeatedly reported mobility issues and incivility caused by the construction, and have called for the installation of CCTV cameras to improve security in the area. However, the focus is now on the working conditions of the workers involved in the renovation of what will be one of the largest stadiums in Europe.
Unions have expressed their concern over workplace accidents in the construction sector in Catalonia. According to data from the Generalitat, several fatal accidents have been recorded this year at construction sites in the province of Barcelona. Last January, a 49-year-old worker died after falling from a height of ten meters in Cerdanyola del Vallès.
The renovation of the Camp Nou, which includes the construction of a new stand and the installation of a roof, is expected to be completed in 2026. The stadium will be renamed Spotify Camp Nou and will host the Champions League final in 2027, after receiving approval from the Government.
For now, construction has been halted in the area of the accident to allow the work of occupational risk prevention technicians and forensic police. More details about the exact circumstances of the fatal blow are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
