The Baguette bakery, driven by the French Hugo Laroche to keep alive the legacy of the century-old Forn Ginebra, has closed at 226 València Street after two years of operation.

The Baguette bakery, located at number 226 València Street in Barcelona, has permanently closed its doors. The business, led by French entrepreneur Hugo Laroche, opened in April 2024 with the intention of rescuing the tradition of the century-old Forn Ginebra, but two years later, the shutter has come down for good.

Laroche, who had considered opening up to four establishments, has been overwhelmed by the reality of the market. The proliferation of artisanal bakery businesses in the Eixample area has saturated the supply, and the dream of keeping the legacy of the historic oven alive could not be sustained.

The premises, advised by the real estate consultancy Laborde Marcet, which highlighted the suitability of the location "to maintain the bakery tradition in a lively neighbourhood," failed to build a sufficient customer base. Previous market studies indicated a niche, but competition and consumption habits worked against it.

The closure of Baguette adds to a trend of commercial turnover in the Eixample, where businesses with similar proposals frequently open and close. For local residents, the loss of an establishment that championed quality French bread represents another empty space in an area where the gastronomic and local offerings are broad but ever-changing.

Hugo Laroche, who invested in the project with the hope of recapturing the spirit of Forn Ginebra, has not disclosed his future plans. The consultancy Laborde Marcet, for its part, has not issued any statements regarding the closure or the possible future of the premises.

The case of Baguette illustrates the risks of entrepreneurship in the artisanal bakery sector in Barcelona, where the high density of supply demands a deep understanding of the area and a highly differentiated proposal. Despite the failure, the business community values the entrepreneurial drive and encourages persistence in new projects.

The premises at 226 València Street is now available for a new business. It is unknown whether it will maintain the use as a bakery or be converted into another type of commerce or service.
