Barcelona City Council will present a new operational strategy of the Urban Guard on Tuesday to strengthen the fight against drug use and sales in public spaces.

The Deputy Mayor for Prevention, Security, Coexistence and Internal Regime of Barcelona, Albert Batlle, and the Chief of the Urban Guard, Chief Inspector Pedro Velázquez, will present the new operational strategy of the police force tomorrow, Tuesday at 10:00 am. The event will take place at the Espai 1843 of the Urban Guard, located at Calle de la Guardia Urbana, 3-5.

The plan aims to reinforce the fight against activities related to drug use and sales in public spaces, one of the main demands from residents in several districts of the city. The presentation comes amid growing concern over the perception of insecurity linked to outdoor drug trafficking.

The new operational strategy adds to the measures that the force has already deployed in recent years in conflict areas such as the Raval neighbourhood or the surroundings of Plaça de Catalunya. With this initiative, the city council aims to provide a more coordinated and effective response to a phenomenon that affects coexistence in public spaces.

According to municipal sources, the plan will incorporate new action mechanisms and increased police presence in the most affected areas, although specific details have not been disclosed until tomorrow's press conference. The presentation will be open to the media, and it is expected that Batlle and Velázquez will detail the key points of the strategy.

The announcement comes after the Barcelona City Council has intensified interventions against illegal street vendors and the sale of drugs from occupied flats in recent months. The new roadmap of the Urban Guard aims to tackle the problem from a comprehensive perspective, combining surveillance, prevention, and collaboration with other police forces.

Residents of the most affected neighbourhoods have been calling for more robust measures for some time. With this plan, the municipal government seeks to provide a visible and measurable response to that demand. Tomorrow's event will serve to outline the implementation timelines and the indicators that will be used to evaluate the results.
