Aemet forecasts temperatures of up to 40 degrees in the province of Barcelona on Thursday, with storms in the afternoon that could bring hail and very strong winds. It will be the last day of the heatwave.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has announced that Thursday will be the hottest day of the current heatwave in the province of Barcelona, with temperatures potentially reaching 40 degrees in the northeastern depressions and the Ebro valley, particularly affecting the inland regions such as Vallès Occidental and Bages. In the afternoon, showers and storms are expected, which could be accompanied by hail and very strong wind gusts.
According to Aemet, maximum temperatures will rise significantly in the Mediterranean arc and the Ebro valley. In the province of Barcelona, thermometers will exceed 35 degrees in most municipalities, except along the coast, where the breeze will soften the heat. In inland areas, such as Terrassa, Sabadell, or Manresa, temperatures could reach 40 degrees.
The minimums will also be high, with tropical nights across much of the territory. Along the Barcelona coastline, temperatures will not drop below 25 degrees, making it difficult to rest at night. Aemet recommends taking extreme precautions, especially between 12 and 5 PM, and avoiding direct sun exposure.
In the afternoon, the formation of evolving clouds will lead to showers and storms in the eastern peninsula, which could affect the province of Barcelona. These storms may be locally strong, with very strong wind gusts and occasional hail. Authorities recommend securing objects on balconies and terraces and avoiding outdoor activities during storms.
The haze will persist in the east and south of the peninsula, including the province of Barcelona, which will reduce visibility and increase the feeling of mugginess. Air quality is expected to worsen during the central hours of the day.
As for the wind, the west component will prevail, generally light, but will strengthen in the afternoon in central-eastern areas. Along the coasts, the wind will follow the sea breeze pattern, providing some relief on the beaches.
This Thursday will be the last day of the heatwave, as a general temperature drop is expected from Friday. However, temperatures will still be high for the season. Aemet recommends staying hydrated, using sun protection, and avoiding outdoor sports during the hottest hours.
In the rest of Spain, the highest temperatures will be recorded in Murcia, Valencia, Alicante, and the lower Ebro, where they could reach 42-44 degrees. In Andalusia, maximums will hover around 40 degrees, and in the Balearics, 35 degrees. In the Canary Islands, very strong wind gusts and temperatures of up to 34 degrees are expected in the peaks and midlands.
Aemet has active warnings for high temperatures in several autonomous communities and advises the public to stay alert for updates on the forecast. In the province of Barcelona, emergency services are prepared to act in case of heat-related incidents.
For Friday, maximum temperatures are expected to drop between 5 and 10 degrees in the province of Barcelona, although minimums will remain high. The probability of storms will decrease, leading to a more stable but still hot weekend.
