The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) announces that tomorrow, Wednesday, a heatwave will begin, bringing temperatures of up to 42 degrees in river valleys of the southwest, the Ebro and Navarra. In the province of Barcelona, maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 35 degrees.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated the alert for a heatwave that will start this Wednesday and will raise temperatures to 40-42 degrees in the river valleys of the southwestern quadrant of the peninsula, the Ebro valley and Navarra. In the province of Barcelona, maximum temperatures will exceed 35 degrees, particularly in the interior and the regions of Vallès, where values close to 38 degrees are expected.
According to Aemet's forecast, Wednesday will be marked by atmospheric stability, with mostly clear or slightly cloudy skies across much of the territory. Only low clouds are expected on the coasts of Galicia, the Cantabrian Sea, and, during the morning, in Andalusia and Mallorca. In the Girona Pyrenees, locally heavy showers may develop, although they will not affect the whole province.
Minimum temperatures will also experience a widespread rise, leading to tropical nights in the Mediterranean and in the river valleys of the southern half, with values not dropping below 20 degrees. In Barcelona, minimums will range around 22-24 degrees on the coast and in the metropolitan area, while in the interior of Vallès, they could be around 18-20 degrees.
Aemet points out that maximum temperatures will rise significantly in the eastern third of the peninsula, Castilla y León, and the archipelagos, while they will decrease in Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea. In the province of Barcelona, the increase will be gradual throughout the week, with peaks expected on Thursday and Friday.
The wind will blow lightly and variably across most of the territory, predominantly from the southwest. In the Strait, moderate levante is expected, and in the Canary Islands, trade winds with strong intervals and possible very strong gusts in exposed areas. On the Barcelona coast, the wind will be light from the northeast, with sea breezes slightly easing temperatures in the coastal strip.
For residents of the province of Barcelona, authorities recommend taking extra precautions against the heat, especially during the hottest hours of the day, staying hydrated frequently, avoiding direct sun exposure, and paying attention to the most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and children. Civil Protection has reminded that no one should be left inside parked vehicles and that homes should be kept cool by closing shutters during the day.
The heatwave is expected to last several days, with temperatures forecasted to begin to drop from the weekend, although Aemet does not rule out that the episode could extend into early next week. It is recommended to follow updates from weather reports and consult Aemet's warnings to stay informed about the situation's evolution.
