The architect and urban planner Zaida Muxí, who was the director of Urbanism at the Santa Coloma de Gramenet City Council, will participate next Thursday, July 23, in the 'Architecture, Landscape and Territory' cycle organized by the Unicaja Foundation and the College of Architects of Cádiz.
The former director of Urbanism at the Santa Coloma de Gramenet City Council, Zaida Muxí, will be the star of the next event in the 'Architecture, Landscape and Territory' cycle held at the Unicaja Foundation's Terrace in Cádiz. The conference, titled 'Caring Cities', will take place on Thursday, July 23 at 20:30 and will discuss how urban planning can integrate people's daily experiences to build more inclusive cities.
A career linked to feminist urbanism
Zaida Muxí (Buenos Aires, 1964) is currently a distinguished professor at the Tecnológico de Monterrey and an associate professor of Urbanism at the Technical School of Architecture of Barcelona. However, her time in public management in Santa Coloma de Gramenet marked a turning point in her career. Between 2015 and 2019, she was the director of Urbanism, Housing, Environment, Urban Ecology, Public Space, Public Thoroughfare and Civics for the local council, where she promoted urban policies with a gender perspective.
She was a co-founder of the Col·lectiu Punt 6, a pioneering collective in researching and developing urban projects with a gender vision, of which she was a part from 2005 to 2015. Her work in this field has made her an international reference in feminist urbanism.
Recognitions and key publications
Muxí's academic career has been recognized with distinctions such as the Federico Mariscal Extraordinary Chair at the Faculty of Architecture of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Jorge Camberos Garibi Medal, awarded by the University of Guadalajara and the Guadalajara International Book Fair in 2023.
Among her most notable works is 'Women, Houses and Cities. Beyond the Threshold' (2018), translated into English and Portuguese, and considered a reference manual on the application of gender perspective to urban design. She is also a co-author, alongside Josep María Montaner, of 'Politics and Architecture. For a Common and Ecofeminist Urbanism' (2020) and 'Architecture and Politics. Essays for Alternative Worlds'. In 2022, she coordinated the 'Anthology of Feminist Thought for Architecture', published by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.
A cycle that advocates for more liveable cities
Muxí's conference is part of a cycle that aims to place the construction of more liveable, sustainable and inclusive cities at the centre of the debate. The programme will continue on August 27 with a talk by José Ramón Sierra, who will advocate for the value of art and traditional knowledge in contemporary architecture. The cycle will conclude on September 24 with architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz, who will reflect on the challenges of building outside Spain.
