Civil Protection has activated the INUNCAT alert in the regions of Garrotxa and Selva due to the forecast of torrential rains that could leave up to 20 l/m2 in 30 minutes. The warning will remain in effect from Saturday afternoon until Sunday.

Civil Protection has implemented the INUNCAT alert in the Girona regions of Garrotxa and Selva in anticipation of an episode of intense rains that could cause flooding. The alert, activated since noon today, will remain in effect during Saturday afternoon and will extend until Sunday.

According to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat), the most intense precipitation will be concentrated in the northeast of the region, with accumulations of up to 20 litres per square metre in just half an hour. The level of danger has been set at a level 3 out of 6, indicating a considerable risk to the population and property.

The alert particularly affects the regions of Garrotxa and Selva, where storms are expected to be more persistent. However, other regions of Girona such as Alt Empordà, Pla de l'Estany, Gironès, Baix Empordà and Ripollès also have active moderate-level warnings. In the province of Barcelona, the regions of Osona, Lluçanès, Vallès Oriental, Vallès Occidental and Baix Llobregat are under surveillance, although with less intensity.

Meteocat has issued a weather situation warning for rain intensity, which will be in effect from 14:00 on Saturday until 20:00 on Sunday. On its social media account X, the agency detailed that the probability of precipitation exceeding 20 mm in 30 minutes is high, especially in the northeastern areas and the central and southern coastal regions of Catalonia.

Civil Protection recommends that citizens take extra precautions, especially during the central hours of the afternoon when the peak of the storm is expected. It is advised to avoid unnecessary travel, not to park vehicles in flood-prone areas, and to stay away from streams and torrents, which can rise suddenly.

The rains this weekend come after a period of stable and hot weather, increasing the risk of flash floods in urban and rural areas. Dry soils have less absorption capacity, so water can accumulate quickly on streets and roads.

For residents of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, the nearest situation will occur in Baix Llobregat and Vallès Occidental, where although the warning is moderate, locally heavy showers are expected. In the Catalan capital, rain could make an appearance during the afternoon, although it will not reach the intensity of the Girona regions.

Civil Protection maintains the INUNCAT plan in alert phase and recommends following the instructions of emergency services through their official channels. It is expected that instability will decrease from Monday, when the rains will give way to drier and sunnier weather.
