O.A.T., 34, died after being struck by a repeat offender fleeing in a stolen car on the BV-1248.
The tragic accident recorded this Friday on the BV-1248 road, near Sabadell, turned out to be much more than a traffic incident. The victim, O.A.T., a 34-year-old local resident, lost his life while heading to work after colliding head-on with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the other car, a repeat offender with at least 15 police records, was fleeing from a robbery committed hours earlier.
According to the Divisió de Trànsit of the Mossos d'Esquadra, the events unfolded around six in the morning. The suspect, specialised in truck thefts in a mode known as 'telonero', was driving at high speed in a stolen car with duplicated license plates to evade police action. In his flight towards Sabadell, he invaded the opposite lane in a section marked with a double continuous line, crashing head-on into the victim's vehicle.
The impact was so violent that both drivers were trapped in the wreckage of their cars. Emergency services from the Generalitat Firefighters had to perform extrication work to free them. The victim was urgently transported to a hospital, where he ultimately died from the severe injuries sustained. The driver of the offending vehicle also suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalised, although his condition is not critical.
The Mossos d'Esquadra have opened an investigation for negligent homicide and have taken statements from several witnesses. The arrested individual, who has an extensive criminal record related to thefts and burglaries, now faces a possible charge of homicide, reckless driving, and vehicle theft. Sources from the investigation have indicated that the suspect had previously been sought for similar incidents and was in a state of judicial rebellion at the time of the accident.
The incident has shocked the Sabadell community, where the victim was known for his hardworking nature and involvement in local activities. The city council has declared an official day of mourning and has called for a minute of silence in the Vila square this Saturday at noon. The mayor has expressed condolences to the family and demanded stronger measures against repeat offenders and road violence.
The BV-1248, a regional road connecting Sabadell with other municipalities in the Vallès Occidental, has been the scene of several serious accidents in recent years. Residents are calling for improvements in road safety, such as the installation of speed cameras or the widening of the roadway, to prevent further tragedies. For now, the investigation remains open, and further charges against the detained driver are not ruled out.
