The Sabadell City Council approved on Monday the awarding of the contract to Mercadona to build around thirty affordable rental homes and a supermarket in La Roureda, for €4.5 million.
The Sabadell City Council will give the green light on Monday, July 27, to the awarding of the contract for the construction of 30 affordable rental homes and a supermarket in the La Roureda neighbourhood. The only company that submitted a bid for the tender was Mercadona, which will carry out the project in collaboration with the Fundació Hàbitat3, an entity specialised in the management of social housing.
The municipal plenary will ratify the agreement adopted by the local Government Board, which validates the proposal from the company chaired by Juan Roig. The contract, valued at €4.5 million, includes the transfer of the municipal plot on Costabona Street for a period of 75 years.
The tender reaches its awarding in the second attempt, after the council declared the first tender void and was forced to carry out a new open tender. The plot has a buildable area of 6,638 square metres for residential use and 2,554 square metres for commercial activity.
Once the development is completed, the homes will be allocated according to the Register of Applicants for Officially Protected Housing in Catalonia, managed in Sabadell through the Local Housing Office of Vimusa. This system ensures that the flats reach families that meet the requirements for access to protected housing.
The project is part of the development of the new La Roureda neighbourhood, where the construction of a Senior Citizens' Complex is also planned, which will include an additional hundred protected homes specifically for this group. Meanwhile, the first phase of urbanisation of the neighbourhood has already been executed, which will include a children's play area, new trees, and urban furniture.
For the residents of Sabadell, this initiative represents a step forward in the provision of affordable housing in the city, especially in a context of rising prices. The combination of social housing with a supermarket on the same plot aims to facilitate the daily lives of future residents and revitalise the area.
Mercadona, for its part, strengthens its presence in Sabadell with this new establishment, which will join the existing ones in the city. The company has previously highlighted its commitment to public-private collaboration to develop projects of social interest.
The City Council hopes that the works can begin in the coming months, once the awarding is formalised and the necessary permits obtained. The promotion is expected to be completed in approximately two years, although specific deadlines will be defined in the final contract.
