On Tuesday, August 12, Santa Perpètua de Mogoda will be one of the best spots in the province of Barcelona to observe the solar eclipse. The moon will obscure 99.69% of the solar disc, a percentage very close to totality that will only be seen in southern Catalonia.
According to data provided by the Santa Perpètua City Council, the eclipse will begin at 19 hours, 34 minutes and 46 seconds and will reach its maximum at 20:29 hours. The phenomenon will end at 20:55 with sunset, so it is recommended to find a place with a clear western horizon.
The total obscuration of the sun will last between 28 seconds and one minute and 32 seconds in areas where it will be complete, such as the Camp de Tarragona, the Terres de l'Ebre, and the southern third of Lleida. In the rest of Catalonia, including the Vallès Occidental region, the eclipse will be partial but equally spectacular.
It has been 121 years since a total solar eclipse was visible from Catalonia, since August 30, 1905. The next one is not expected for another 154 years, making Tuesday's event a unique opportunity.
The City Council reminds that looking directly at the sun can severely damage eyesight. The only safe way to observe it is with certified glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard, or through indirect methods such as a cardboard with a hole that projects the image of the sun.
Conventional sunglasses, as well as X-rays, CDs, or fogged photographic films are not suitable. One should also not look through cameras or binoculars without the appropriate filter. Children must be supervised at all times during the observation.
