A report from the Llobregat Business Forum reveals that 817 companies in the health sector employ 40,280 people in the region and L'Hospitalet, 13% of the total in Catalonia. The future BioCluster promises 30,000 more jobs.
The health sector has become a fundamental economic pillar for Baix Llobregat and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. A report prepared by the Llobregat Business Forum, in collaboration with the Baix Llobregat County Council, estimates that this sector generates 40,280 jobs in the area, distributed across 817 companies.
These figures account for 13% of the total health sector workforce in all of Catalonia and 10% of the companies dedicated to this activity. The study highlights that Baix Llobregat and L'Hospitalet concentrate 18% of the pharmaceutical industry's turnover in the Barcelona area, representing more than 5% of the total business volume in the region.
Among the companies with the highest turnover are Bayer, Laboratorios Reig Jofre, and Neuraxpharm, three firms with a significant presence in the area. The report details that health activities —hospitals, medical centres, dental clinics, and other healthcare services— account for the majority of employment, with 33,205 workers in 715 companies, more than 80% of the total sector.
The manufacturing of pharmaceutical products employs 3,825 people, while research and development (R&D) activities exceed 3,800 jobs. Meanwhile, the veterinary sector includes 92 companies, being the second branch with the highest number of firms. The report also highlights that nearly 14% of workers in health activities across Catalonia are employed in L'Hospitalet and Baix Llobregat.
The study focuses on the future Innovation and Health BioCluster, a project driven by Esplugues de Llobregat, Barcelona, and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. According to forecasts, this complex will generate 30,000 direct jobs and an economic impact of 4.4 billion euros, equivalent to 1.82% of Catalonia's GDP. The aim is to establish L'Hospitalet as the major biomedical capital of Southern Europe.
The report also emphasizes the role of AEBALL Salut, the division of the business association specialized in the health sector, which works to strengthen collaboration between companies, research centres, and institutions in the area. Its work aims to promote innovation, boost new projects, and consolidate Baix Llobregat and L'Hospitalet as one of the main reference hubs in health, biotechnology, and biomedical research.
