The Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona and the area of the Comissionada d’Ús Social del Català of the City Council have organised seven intensive Catalan courses for 143 ESO students from the Accelerated Reception Classes (AAA) during the month of July. The initiative, free for participants, aims to prevent language regression in summer.
A total of 143 ESO students from the Accelerated Reception Classes (AAA) in Barcelona are participating this July in seven intensive Catalan courses promoted by the Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona and the area of the Comissionada d’Ús Social del Català of the City Council. The initiative, which is being held for the second consecutive year, aims to continue the learning of Catalan during the school holidays and prevent the loss of acquired knowledge.
Language reinforcement for young migrants
The courses, which are taught at the Escola Oficial d’Idiomes de Drassanes, are aimed at students from countries such as Venezuela, Honduras, Colombia, Peru, Morocco, China, Senegal, Pakistan, Ukraine, or Myanmar. Most are from Latin America, but there are also students from other regions of the world. The training is free and takes place from June 29 to July 17, with a commitment of three hours daily and a weekly cultural outing, such as visits to Palau Güell or workshops in painting and magic.
The Comissionada d’Ús Social del Català, Marta Salicrú, has highlighted the importance of these classes: “They are aimed at two key groups for the promotion of Catalan: young people and migrants. As an administration, we must provide tools so that all citizens of Barcelona can acquire the skills to speak the language.”
The Accelerated Reception Classes, a consolidated programme
The AAA are a service for ESO students who are entering the Catalan educational system for the first time. They offer intensive language immersion in two periods: from September to January and from February to June. In Barcelona, there are ten classes, each with a capacity for 20 students. In the last two academic years, a total of 790 secondary students from public schools have participated.
The summer courses are the natural continuation of this programme. They allow students to maintain contact with the language during the holidays and advance in their learning. In this edition, the 143 participants come from the 400 students who have gone through the AAA during the 2025-2026 academic year and who have expressed interest in continuing their education.
Small groups and personalised attention
The courses are organised into six B1 level groups and one A2 level group, with a maximum of 20 students per group. This facilitates more personalised attention and better support in the learning process, according to sources from the Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona. The total training amounts to 45 hours, complemented by weekly cultural activities.
The initiative is funded by the area of the Comissionada d’Ús Social del Català of the City Council of Barcelona and is part of the joint actions of the City Council and the Consorci to promote Catalan and support the inclusion of young people entering the Catalan educational system.
For the students, these courses not only reinforce the language but also prevent school disengagement and facilitate the continuation of post-compulsory studies. Last summer's pilot experience already demonstrated its usefulness in improving the linguistic competence of the participants.
