The Faculty of Nursing at UB is organising an exhibition at the L'Hospitalet Museum – La Armonía that highlights the essential role of nurses, featuring historical objects and a critical look at gender.
The exhibition “Nurses”, driven by the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and the L'Hospitalet Museum – La Armonía, will open its doors on 12 May in the Armonía space of the city. The exhibition, which will be open until 25 October, is part of the events celebrating the 575th anniversary of UB and International Nurses Day.
A Critical Look at Historical Invisibility
The exhibition curator, Dr. Laura Martínez, a professor at the Faculty of Nursing, emphasised that the exhibition “proposes a critical and sensitive perspective on a reality often rendered invisible: the essential role of nurses in sustaining life and the healthcare system.” The displayed objects — instruments, books, anatomical models, and images — are not mere remnants of the past, but “fragments of a long, patient, and profound history, predominantly woven by women.”
According to the organisers, the exhibition incorporates a contemporary and advocacy dimension. The objects cease to be mere witnesses of the past and become active elements of social reflection, prompting citizens to consider the structural value of care. “It is an invitation to look at what often remains out of focus: the invisible fabric of care that makes shared life possible,” Martínez added.
Parallel Events and Solidarity Concert
The official opening will take place on Tuesday, 12 May at 19:00 in the Armonía space of the L'Hospitalet Museum, with representatives from the academic and institutional fields. The event will be free and open to the public.
As a finale, on Saturday, 16 May, the Night of Music at the Museums will be celebrated, featuring a concert by the group Nurse Rock Club, composed of members from the Faculty of Nursing at UB. The concert will start at 22:00 at the L'Hospitalet History Museum. Admission will be free until capacity is reached.
The exhibition is also part of the cultural programming of the L'Hospitalet Museum, which aims to bring healthcare heritage closer to the public. For the residents of L'Hospitalet and the rest of the metropolitan area, it is a unique opportunity to closely explore the evolution of nursing, a profession that, as the curator reminds us, “has grown amid silences, often subordinated and shaped by gender relations that have obscured the value of its knowledge.”
The visiting hours will be the usual for the museum: from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00, and Sundays from 10:00 to 14:00. The museum will be closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
