The city of Terrassa will host the 'Siempre es 26' event on July 25, an annual solidarity gathering for Cuba that will include music, debates, and food collection.
On July 25, Terrassa will become the epicentre of solidarity with Cuba in the province of Barcelona with the celebration of the 'Siempre es 26' event, organised by the local solidarity movement. The gathering, which will take place in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento starting at 18:30, will feature a programme of cultural and political activities.
An event with history and advocacy
The call, which is repeated each year around July 26 —the date of the assault on the Moncada Barracks in 1953— aims to keep the flame of support for the Cuban people alive in the face of the economic blockade from the United States. According to sources from the organisation, this year's slogan is “A people that resists, a solidarity that does not give up”.
During the event, representatives from the Cuban Consulate in Barcelona are expected to speak, as well as local activists who have participated in solidarity brigades on the island. Additionally, a documentary about the current reality of the Caribbean country will be screened, and there will be a concert featuring Cuban and Latin music groups.
“It is an event open to all citizens, not just those already convinced. We want people to know about the resistance of the Cuban people and to join the campaigns for collecting food and medicines,” explain the organising association.
Food and medical supplies collection
One of the central themes of the day will be the solidarity collection campaign. Attendees will be able to contribute non-perishable food, hygiene products, and medical supplies that will be sent to Cuba through diplomatic channels. In the previous edition, according to data from the organisers, over 500 kilos of food and medical supplies worth 3,000 euros were collected.
The initiative has the support of the Terrassa City Council, which provides the space and collaborates on logistics. The council has highlighted in a statement its commitment to “the values of international solidarity and development cooperation.”
A context of global mobilization
The event in Terrassa is part of a series of mobilisations taking place that same weekend across Spain and Europe. In Madrid, on Friday the 24th, 'Baila un son, por la Revolución' will be held, while similar events will also take place in Sevilla and Las Palmas. Even in Paris, the association Cuba Sí France has called for a protest against the blockade on July 25.
For the residents of Terrassa, the event represents an opportunity to engage in an international cause without leaving the city. The event will begin with a popular paella at 18:30, followed by speeches and live music. Admission is free, and it is recommended to bring food or products to donate.
