The Barcelona City Council has activated nine new water play areas, bringing the total to 18 spaces across the city for refreshing this summer.
Barcelona now has all 18 water play areas planned for this summer. During June and July, nine new refreshment zones have been launched, adding to the nine that have been operational since the end of May, effectively doubling the number from last year.
The new spaces are located at plaza Carme Simó (Ciutat Vella), Mistral Avenue (Eixample), Joan Pelegrí Square, and Justa Freire Gardens (Sants-Montjuïc), Joan Reventós Park (Sarrià-Sant Gervasi), Harry Walker Square, and the gardens of Baix Guinardó (Horta-Guinardó), Antoni Santiburcio Park (Sant Andreu), and Lolita Torrentó Square (Sant Martí).
These are in addition to those activated at the end of May in Canyelles (Nou Barris), the park of les Rieres d'Horta (Horta-Guinardó), Bon Pastor (Sant Andreu), the Canòdrom de la Meridiana (Sant Andreu), Maresme Square (Sant Martí), the old Casa de l'Aigua (Sant Andreu), Glòries Park (Eixample/Sant Martí), the gardens of Sant Joan de Déu in Illa Diagonal (Les Corts), and Caramelles Square (Ciutat Vella).
This year’s novelty is that the hours have been extended from 10:00 to 20:00, without interruption at midday. The spaces are designed for children aged 5 and above, who must enter wearing shoes, and pets are not allowed. They will be operational until September.
All play areas operate with a responsible water usage system: they are activated with a button, and a new cycle does not start until the previous one has finished, to minimise consumption. The City Council reminds that these are the only authorised spaces for playing with water and that swimming in ornamental fountains is prohibited.
This initiative is part of the Pla Calor, within the Pla Clima framework, to adapt the city to high temperatures and protect the most vulnerable people. These spaces are also integrated into the network of climate shelters and the municipal plan to promote play in public spaces.
Looking ahead to 2027, five new areas are planned: two at the fountains on Gran Via (one at the intersection with Espronceda Street and another at Espronceda Square), two in Ciutat Vella (Poeta Boscà Square and Fotògrafs Català Square), and one on Palamós Street in Nou Barris.
Barcelona also has 1,761 drinking water fountains, which can be located through the free apps 'Fonts BCN' and 'Barcelona a la Butxaca'.
