The new waste collection system with identified containers continues to yield results in Barberà del Vallès. June's data confirms that the model works and that the trend is clearly upward: selective collection has reached 54.08%, a historic record for the municipality.
This figure represents a qualitative leap compared to the beginning of the year. In January, the percentage was at 41.39%, and now the annual average for 2026 is already nearing 50.43%, the highest recorded to date. The Barberà del Vallès City Council attributes this improvement to greater citizen involvement in source separation.
The impact is particularly noticeable in the fraction that cannot be recycled. The generation of residual waste has decreased from 605.54 tonnes in January to 442.32 tonnes in June, meaning that hundreds of tonnes are being diverted from landfill to recycling.
The improvement is observed across all fractions. Organic matter has increased from 123.18 tonnes in January to 195.5 tonnes in June, while packaging has risen from 84.36 to 91.24 tonnes. Paper and cardboard also increased from 63.98 to 74.86 tonnes, and glass rose from 49.26 to 55.18 tonnes.
The data confirms that the new system is not only implemented but is consolidating month by month. The City Council reminds that the overall figure can improve even further with the use of other municipal services such as the drop-off centre, mini drop-off points, textile collection, or oil collection.
With these numbers, Barberà del Vallès ranks as one of the municipalities in the region with the best recycling performance, in a context where European regulations require exceeding 55% in selective collection in the coming years.
