The Mataró City Council has obtained a grant of €50,000 from the Kit Espais de Dades programme, promoted by Red.es under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and funded by the European Union with Next Generation EU funds. The aim is to prepare and share municipal data related to urban pest prevention.
The subsidised action has allowed for the organisation, structuring, documentation, protection, and connection of different sources of municipal information so that they can be incorporated into EDINT (Intelligent Urban Infrastructure Data Space), an environment that facilitates the secure exchange of data between administrations and its reuse to generate knowledge and improve decision-making.
Mataró joined the network that is part of the EDINT programme last October, an initiative that allows for data sharing between cities to facilitate the development of new data-driven use cases that improve decision-making and manage the city and its services more efficiently.
A use case focused on pests
The data has been prepared using a potential use case on urban pests as a reference. This has allowed for the selection of information sources that, when analysed together, can help study the factors related to the emergence of rats, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and other pests.
Among these sources are incidents reported by citizens, well inspections, the sewage network, waste containers, food and beverage establishments, population density, green areas, the state of public space, and meteorological data.
The project, therefore, does not yet involve the creation of a predictive pest system, but rather prepares the necessary database and infrastructure for subsequent analysis, indicators, or models that allow for the detection of spatial and temporal patterns.
Interest for other cities
The incorporation of this data into EDINT allows its value to extend beyond Mataró. Other municipalities can prepare similar datasets, compare indicators, and analyse whether there are common factors in the emergence of urban pests.
This shared dimension can facilitate the identification of patterns between cities, the exchange of best practices, and the future development of analytical models reusable by different administrations. EDINT precisely provides a common environment for interoperability, governance, and secure data exchange.
For the residents of Mataró, this initiative represents a further step towards more efficient management of urban services, with the aim of preventing the emergence of pests and improving the quality of life in the city. The data collected will allow for anticipating problems and acting more quickly and effectively in the medium term.
