The Generalitat presented the Maresme Agreement plan this Saturday at the TecnoCampus, which will transform mobility in the N-II and C-32 corridor with a state investment of €384 million. The urban section of Mataró will be the first to be executed.
The Government of Catalonia revealed this Saturday to the mayors of Maresme the roadmap of the Maresme Agreement, an ambitious mobility plan that will begin this winter with the pacification of the urban section of the N-II through Mataró. President Salvador Illa and the Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque, presented the project at the TecnoCampus, in the presence of the mayor of Mataró, David Bote.
First phase: pacification and bike lane in Mataró
According to the Government, the transformation works of the N-II in the section that crosses Mataró will begin next winter. This is the first action of the agreement, which includes the pacification of the road and the implementation of a bike lane that will connect different points of the city. The tender for this work is expected to take place this summer, according to sources from the Generalitat.
The project is not limited to Mataró. The tender for the rapid bus corridor between Blanes and Lloret de Mar has also been announced, as well as the start of works for a new roundabout in Alella to connect with the C-32 and a pedestrian bridge over the N-II in Sant Pol de Mar. All of this is part of a package of investments that the State will finance with €384 million.
The five axes of the Maresme Agreement
The plan is structured around five lines of action. The first aims to improve the connectivity of the C-32 and its surroundings, with new links and better connections with the N-II and the local network. The second is the pacification of the N-II itself and the creation of infrastructure for non-motorised mobility, such as the bike lane in Mataró. The third addresses cross permeability and territorial integration, while the fourth focuses on the decarbonisation and digitalisation of the corridor to reduce environmental impacts. Finally, it is expected to improve mobility with the Selva Marítima, covering the connectivity and capacity deficit.
The precedent of the Maresme Agreement dates back to an agreement from 2009 between the Government and the State for the transfer of the N-II between Montgat and Tordera. This new agreement is framed within the management assignments between both administrations, with a total investment exceeding €1.1 billion across Catalonia.
A road with 30,000 daily vehicles
Currently, the N-II has sections with intensities of up to 30,000 daily vehicles, while in other areas the traffic is below 10,000. The Government's estimates indicate that the combination of improving the connectivity of the C-32 and pacifying the N-II will reduce congestion and improve road safety. For the residents of Mataró, this will mean a significant change in their daily lives: less noise, less through traffic, and a new bike lane that will connect the city more sustainably.
The mayor of Mataró, David Bote, has positively assessed the announcement and highlighted that the pacification of the urban section is a historic demand of the municipality. The works, which will be tendered in the coming months, will affect a stretch of several kilometres within the municipal area, although the Government has not yet specified the exact execution timeline. The works are expected to be completed by 2027.
