A fire caused by the battery of an electric scooter left three people with minor injuries in a premises on Martorell Street, in the Collblanc neighbourhood of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat.
The explosion of an electric scooter battery triggered a fire that resulted in three minor injuries in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 28, just before nine in the evening, when emergency services received several calls reporting a fire in an occupied premises on Martorell Street, in the Collblanc neighbourhood.
Three fire crews from the Bombers de la Generalitat, three ambulances from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), and four patrols from the city's Guàrdia Urbana were dispatched to the scene. Neighbours reported to the responders that shortly before nine, they heard a series of explosions coming from inside the premises, followed by smoke and cries for help.
The firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, which nearly consumed the entire interior of the premises, while rescuing the occupants. The three injured individuals suffered burns and smoke inhalation, but SEM paramedics treated them on-site and, after assessing their injuries as minor, they were discharged voluntarily.
After extinguishing the fire, an initial inspection confirmed that the cause was the explosion of an electric scooter battery. Although the premises were severely damaged, the rest of the building did not suffer structural damage.
The Guàrdia Urbana of L'Hospitalet has reminded residents that batteries of Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP) can pose a serious fire risk if they are damaged, mishandled, or improperly charged. They recommend following the manufacturer's instructions, not charging them overnight or near flammable materials, and replacing them if they show deformities or overheating.
This incident adds to other similar occurrences reported in recent months in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, where the increasing use of electric scooters has multiplied reports of fires related to their lithium batteries. Authorities stress the importance of purchasing certified devices and avoiding recharging them without supervision.
Residents of the Collblanc neighbourhood have expressed their concerns about safety in homes where these types of vehicles are stored. The L'Hospitalet City Council has announced that awareness campaigns on the safe use of electric scooters and their batteries will be strengthened.
